Dear Friends,
Spring, 2002
We hope you've had a healthy winter. The CRRNJ Terminal area is open again after six months of use as the WTC Victims' Family Assistance Center. On Feb. 4, Congressman Robert Menendez announced his securing of millions of dollars of funding for the US Army Corps to do nature restoration feasibility studies for 251 acre park's Interior. Concurrently, the NJDEP'S Interior Planning Committee has been working out the process for the International Design Competition for the Interior.
Thanks to people's writing and calling Governor James E. McGreevey to urge that he uphold the NJDEP's rejection of the Development Corporation's commercial concert series, this outrageous traffic jam-causing plan has been stopped for this summer! The Friends and our close ally, the LSP Conservancy, has requested that the NJDEP authorize a comprehensive, independent audit of the Dev. Corp. to find out "where's the money? ". The audit is part of our on-going campaign to convince the Governor to end the NJDEP's contract with the Development Corporation with its endless commercialization plans.
The Friends Spring meeting on current issues will be on Sat. April 27, at 10 AM at the Interpretive Center; the dedicated park Superintendent Steve Ellis plans to attend.
