"Until someone justifies this delay, the scenario unspooling in most heads
is that Murphy has cravenly ordered the DEP to shelve its design plan for
the park – at least temporarily – because of blowback from a

a fetish for developing the most important recreational space in the state.
That is an outrage, even by Jersey standards. Indeed, only Murphy can stop

continues to be a great place" by

While I greatly admire Bob Hurley for what his accomplished during his
tenure as a basketball coach at St Anthony’s High School, I do not believe
that expertise in one field automatically conveys expertise in another.
While he may know the fine points of coaching, open space/green space
development is not in that arena. Unfortunately, many of the opinions he
expressed in the 2/17 article are
built on misconceptions.
What is even worse, in this case, is the attempt to use environmental
justice as a reason for private development. The type of development
proposed by the “People’s Park” will do nothing for those who live in Ward F
and have used and enjoyed the park for decades.

opportunity to start acting the role by calling a news conference and

Murphy’s inexcusable silence on the subject."

financial interest in commercialization? Or, will they step out of the back

Liberty State Park and its surrounding neighborhoods.
Stack, Cunningham, and Murphy have the chance right now to put one battle to
rest and get the Caven Point Peninsula protections through the Legislature,
without strings, and into the law books."

"Tune out aggressive lobbying and pass LSP law"
"Stack's bill would preserve the ecologicallysensitive peninsula as a natural
habitat, effectively thwarting any attempt to lease or sell it to a private
entity like Fireman's golf course.
But already last week, one of Fireman's front groups tried to redirect the
conversation with insinuations that the land needs pollution remediation,
something the State Department of Environment Protection has long
said is complete.
Experience tells us that money talks. But it doesn't always win.
Caven Point Peninsula must be maintained as a breeding ground and habitat
for birds and other wildlife in our otherwise urban city and country. As
such, it is also a place where our schoolchildren can go to learn about
nature beyond reading a book and without taking an expensive field trip.
The full state Senate and Assembly along with Gov. Murphy must tune
out Fireman's aggressive lobbying and get this law on the books.
By ending this battle in the war for the future of Liberty State Park, we
can move on to the next - preventing the construction of the
Fireman-supported sports and entertainment complex that will erect a new
barrier to the people's enjoyment of the park: ticket booths."

Fireman is trying to stir up a phony racial divide.
"People in the community are asking for this park to be protected," says
Gilmore, who is Black."This narrative is being painted to get Black and
Brown people to be for this bill as it stands without those protections."
Fireman's
bill doesn't grab the land outright, not just yet. He's tried crude land
grabs in the past, and failed each time. Bruised by the experience,
he's now hired several of Trenton's most expensive strategists and lobbyists
to revise his tactics."

The title itself (of the Fireman LSP law) is the epitome of deceit
as it will not "conserve" any of the existing natural or cultural resources
and it will not build "community" as it will divide those who can pay from
those who can't.
"There was a fundamental disagreement (with the LSP Development
Corporation) over the very concept of what public lands are and who should
use them. I believe it came from the LSPDCs perception that public land is a
commodity to be monetized rather than the foundation upon which a community
is built. Such a paradigm fosters an elitist attitude where the commodity is
best used by those who can afford to pay for it. An attitude that ignores
issues of equity and fosters systemic bias"
Piece by piece, the park will be cut into revenue-generating private
initiatives for the economically privileged at the expense of the local
residents who need open space."

"Visions of a 5,000-seat sports arena, gone. Thoughts of a 7,000-seat
concert venue, also gone. "The
head of the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) laid out
general plans for the revitalization of Liberty State Park Thursday, but he
was specific in saying there would be no major commercialization or
privatization of the state park on the Hudson River waterfront".
Privatization of a public asset that is owned by no one because it belongs
to everyone is not a thing, period, full stop, said DEP Commissioner Shawn
LaTourette.

"The tug of war over Liberty State Park’s future continues as Jersey City
Mayor Steve Fulop said he’s opposed to any big developments on the
waterfront park or any golf course expansions onto migratory bird habitats.
During an interview with NJ Spotlight News, which aired Thursday night,
Fulop said that major park proposals such as a concert venue or a sports
stadium would not be appropriate, but he left the door open to smaller
amenities in the park such as a community center, a pool, and an ice rink.
He also said that Caven Point, a migratory bird habitat that has been caught
in the crosshairs of privatization, should also be protected".

"Paul Fireman, the billionaire owner of Liberty National Golf Club,
said in 2020 he would "halt" his efforts to acquire the spit of public park
land known as Caven Point to build a few new holes for the exclusive club.
And when a new bill to create a Liberty State Park task force emerged this
summer and was quickly fast-tracked for passage, Fireman's allies insisted
that the suggestion it had anything to do with a renewal of his golf course
expansion efforts was a conspiracy theory.
It's worth noting, then that Fireman's golf club lobbied for the new bill,

make the push. That's the same lobbyist the club used in 2020, when
language was quietly inserted into the state budget that was widely read as
a way for the club to get its clubs on Caven Point, a migratory bird habitat
and uniquely wild 22 acres in the middle of the nation's most urbanized

southwest of the park. In a statement, Mr. Fireman said he was backing the

and families from all over the region have gathered and played since LSP
opened in 1976. Fireman's plans, in addition to wanting Caven Point, are for
exclusionary admission-fee sports and entertainment commercial venues and
Fireman and his surrogates reject the DEP's plans for habitats and miles of
paths and free active recreation.

Middlesex County Democratic Committee Chairman Kevin McCabe, whose
organization put Speaker Craig Coughlin in power. The Middlesex Dems have
also contributed to keeping Murphy propped during the most difficult days.
Jeff Tittel, former executive of the New Jersey Sierra Club said the case
epiotomizes New Jersey elected officials' eargerness to talk about climate
change in the broadest terms possible while doing nothing to that expansion
of development in New Jersey, and even quietly facilitating it in Liberty
State Park.

article has the major mistake that Paul Fireman "aborted" his privatization
assault on LSP which he announced after
his lobbyists' LSP privatization sneak attack failed in July 2020 in
a legislative budget bill. Fireman's phony front group, whose CEO Stovell
admitted being funded by Fireman, has continually viciously and untruthfully
attacked the Protection Act and the Friends of LSP in news stories, press
releases, and months of google ads, plus his well-connected lobbyist has
continued to give its disinformation to legislators.
